Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement

Subject Overall Reflection

In this subject the author was being introduce to new types of measurement. Types of measurement that being introduce a Cold Water Installation, Sanitary Installation, Electrical Installation, Fire protection Installation, Air Cond Installation and other various Engineering Works including Rail Track. All of this topic is being taught to author as a knowledge to be use in working life. Furthermore this is to show what had the author has learn in Taylor's University.

Objectives

The objectives for this subject is to teach the author the purpose of understanding the measurements. In this subject, the author was being teach to know the responsibility in preparing a Bills of Quantity in a group. Besides from learning how to measure the works, this subject is also taught the author to learn working in team, making a decision to be apply to fulfill the task that has being given.

Learning Outcome

At the end of this subject, the author will know how to do a  measurement for all the element of works. Besides doing measurement, the author will know how to write description for Bills of Quantity in correct way. Other than that, the author will improve his skill in reading drawings. As for the past, the author only being taught to used Standard Method of Measurement 2(SMM2) but in this subject, the author is being introduced to new book to refer to in doing a measurement. The book is called Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement (CESMM). 

Course Work 1 

For course work 1, it is consist on mid term test. It contribute 25% of overall mark. The test was being conducted during week 7 before the semester break. In this test the student being ask to complete all the question given and to fill in all the answer in the taking-off sheet, dimension paper and the Bills of Quantity. It was conducted to test the understanding of students towards this subject.

Course Work 2

For course work 2, the author has being given a task to complete an assignment in a group. This assignment will contribute to 25% of overall mark. This group assignment is consist of 5 students per group. The objective of this assignment is to test the knowledge of the students about the Electrical Installation. Besides doing taking off, it test the skills of student to apply the clause in SMM2 for preparing the Bills of Quantity. At the end of this course, the students will understand well on how to prepare the Bills of Quantity during working life.

Subject Overall Reflection

This subject being taught is continuous from the previous subject which is the Professional Practice 1. The author was being taught about the overview of the role of professional Quantity surveyors in working life. In this part, the author will learn about the relevant clauses that being use in preparing the tender document by referring to Form of Contract 2006 (with Quantities). Other than that, the author also learn about types of certificates and final account. 

Objectives

To make sure students able to understand the role of Quantity Surveyors in tendering stage until the final account stage. Other than that, author will learn about procurement methods, types of certificates, relevant clauses that related to the certificates, clauses that related to cause of delay, and etc. 

Learning Outcome

At the end of this subject, author will understand deeper about the role of Quantity Surveyors related to form of contract. In working life, author will able to choose the correct procurement method for client, apply the correct form of contract between government and private project. Furthermore, the author can further the working experience into contractor rather than just stay as quantity surveyors.

For course work 2, it is consist of assignment 1. It contribute 15% of overall mark. The assignment must be submit during week 8 after the semester break. It's an individual assignment. In this assignment, the author being ask to complete all the question given. The assignment being given to test the knowledge of student regarding the terms or phrase that being use in working industry. At the end of this assignment, it can help the author to understand more about term in working life, and able to understand well when communicate with other professionals.

Course Work 3

For course work 3, it is consist of assignment 2. It contribute 15% of overall mark. The assignment must be submit during week 12 It's an individual assignment. In this assignment, the author being ask to complete all the question given. The assignment being given to test the knowledge of student regarding the types of  certificates that being release by Architect in working industry. At the end of this assignment, it can help the author to understand more about the certificate that being used in working and able to understand well when giving advice to contractor or clients.

Concept in Financial Management

Subject Overall Reflection

The author was being taught about the overview of the role of professional Quantity surveyors in working life of contractor companies. In this part, the author will learn about how to manage an account for a company, how to increase a company profit and prevent a company from bankruptcy. Other than that, this subject also teach about IRR, NPV, Discount method, Payback discount method and etc.

Objectives

To make sure students able to understand the role of Quantity Surveyors in construction company or non related to quantity surveyors firm. Other than that, author will learn about way to manage the company, staff and finances. It introduce to author terms that being used in financial managements.

Learning Outcome

At the end of this subject, author will understand deeper about the role of Quantity Surveyors related to financial management. In working life, author will able to choose appropriate accounting principle and practices to analyse construction firm finance. Other than that, author will learn the investment techniques which is important to determine the cost and benefits of the project. Lastly, the author will learn about how to boost the morale of staff by giving motivation and performance for career improvement.

In this assignment, the author being ask to complete all the task given. The assignment being given to test the knowledge of student in preparing the financial report of a chosen company . At the end of this assignment, it can help the author to understand more on financial management and the correct method to forecast company future income plus learning the correct way to study the annual report of a company.

Subject Overall Reflection

This subject teach the author about Building Economics which enables the student to understand the Quantity Surveyor's role during the pre-tender stage of the entire supply chain which will help the student in their working life. Besides that, student will be exposed to practical situations of the various methods of controlling the cost of buildings at the design stage and thus student will came to know the ways to control the cost of a building or structure in the future. Moreover, author came to know the relationship between building morphology, design variables and life cycle costing of a building which make them a succeed consultant to advice their client in the future. The author was also came to learn and apply information technology in the cost planning.

Objectives

The author's objectives besides study is also be aware of the nature, content, and significance of cost control, cost planning and learned the roles of project teams to fulfill client's requirement. Student also need to learned the impact of design variables to obtain an economical design and to know the actual duties of the quantity surveyor in the overall supply chain.

Learning Outcome

At the end of this subject, author will understand deeper about the role of Quantity Surveyors related to construction economics. Other than that, the author will also learned the various methods of pre-tender estimating. Lastly, student will also learned on how to generate an estimate at pre-tender stage, cost plan according to historical data and s-curve for financial planning to a proposed project.

For course work 1, it is consist on mid term test. It contribute 20% of overall mark. The test was being conducted during week 11. In this test the student being ask to complete all the question given. It was conducted to test the understanding of students towards this subject. 

Course Work 2 

For course work 2, it is consist of 2 assignment in 1. It contribute 30% of overall mark. The assignment must be submit during week 12. It's a group assignment and also individual assignment. Each group will have 6 students. In this assignment, the author being ask to complete all the task given. The group assignment being given to test the knowledge of student in real actual field of work while working in a team. While individual assignment will test the knowledge of towards the analysis study by given situation. At the end of this assignment, it can help the author to learn the proper way to give advice to client in working life. Besides doing measurement, role of Quantity Surveyor is also to give client an advice on other issues.

INTELLIGENT BUILDING (QSB 2463)

Subject Overall Reflection

This subject teach the author about Intelligent Buildings which enables the student to understand the Quantity Surveyor's role in applying the technologies to make the building become intelligent. Plus to make the building intelligent, it also to make the material to use to build the building is being reduce. Other than that, the building itself must be user friendly towards the occupant. This subject does not have a test or final exam.

Objectives

The author's objectives besides study is also be aware of the nature, content, and significance of intelligent building, cost planning and learned the roles of project teams to fulfill client's requirement. Student also need to learned the impact of design variables to obtain an economical design and to know the actual duties of the quantity surveyor in the overall supply chain.

Learning Outcome

At the end of this subject, author will understand deeper about the role of Quantity Surveyors related to intelligent buildings. Other than that, the author will also learned the various technologies that include the technical things such as services in the building that can improve the life of the occupants. At the same time, to reduce the usage of earth resources  and make it more safe for the building to be occupy.

Course Work 

For this subject it has 3 course work. For the 1st assignment is individual report and student require to write around 3000 words regarding the intelligent building that being choose. While 2nd and 3rd is a group assignment. In this assignment, students will choose an intelligent building based on the criteria that being ask by the lecturer. Then prepare a 10000 words of report and present it at front.
